Moeller Observatory Structures

The Moeller Observatory is comprised of several structures and structural features. They include the Main Dome Observatory, the Roll-Off Observatory, the Observing Platform, and the Camping Terrace. Each one contributes to the over all observer experience at The Moeller Observatory.

The Main Dome Observatory

The primary structure on site is a 25 foot diameter two-level observatory building topped by an Ash Dome. The interior is beautifully woodworked and finished with stained glass fixtures and adaptable LED lighting.

The main pier is 4-foot in diameter to support the 1-meter reflector on the second floor. The second floor has a workstation and adaptable lighting allowing both white light and red light conditions. The exterior of the dome is beautifully finished with local river rock.

Roll-Off Observatory

The secondary structure is a large roll-off building which on the main floor contains a kitchenette, a single sleeping quarters, and a full bathroom. The lower level features a sleeping room with three double bunks as well as a second full bathroom. The entire building features adaptable LED lighting for casual entertaining or observing conditions.

The roll-off roof reveals three substantial mounts which hold telescopes for distinct usage purposes; a TEC 250 10-inch refractor, a Planewave Delta Rho 350 astrograph, and a Lunt 152 mm double-stacked hydrogen-alpha solar scope.

The building is conditioned to maintain a comfortable temperature year round. The lower sidewalls on the observing deck create an open atmosphere with beautiful views of the Ohio River, and a clear view of the Southern horizon.

The Observing Platform

Surrounding the 25 foot dome is the Moeller Observing Platform. This 70 foot platform takes advantage of the high elevation of the site, to provide sweeping views and grand vistas in all directions. The platform is equipped with electric outlets for visitors to power their own equipment, and has an easy access ramp, allowing for gear to be brought in on carts from the upper parking area. This platform really provides an immersive observing experience due to the combination of virtually no obstructions and the higher elevation.

Moeller Camping Terrace

Sitting below the main observatory facing the river is a broad, level terrace which can be used for camping. This area was created by bringing in over 300 truckloads of dirt, to accommodate camping on what was previously a sloped terrain. This area can easily provide space for 20-30 tents on any given night, and also provides electrical outlets for campers. Guests are encouraged to set up their own gear in this area, and a short rock wall provides a comfortable place to sit while attending to gear.
