The Moeller / CAS Partnership

The Moeller Observatory has partnered with the Cincinnati Astronomical Society (CAS) to assist with managing and maintaining the facility as well as arranging and conducting activities on site. The partnership began in 2022 when Dieter Moeller approached CAS with the idea, even before construction had begun at the facility. CAS formed a committee to develop the processes and structures needed, and determine the roles CAS would play in the partnership.

In consideration of Dieter Moeller’s major investment in the facility, CAS has chosen to implement a “structured access” program, which promotes maintaining the integrity of the equipment, structures, and grounds at the Moeller Observatory. A small dedicated group of trained CAS members operate the telescopes and host activities at the observatory on behalf of the entire Society. This group, known as the CAS Moeller Observatory Team (CASMOT), coordinates activities, ensures the site is ready for events, and prepares the telescopes for observing and astrophotography.

CAS also provides recommendations on equipment, safety, and facility upgrades as part of the partnership. CAS currently employs a team of 20 members to operate the telescopes, chosen from the membership based on longevity, skill set, commitment to volunteerism, and availability to lead activities at The Moeller Observatory.

CAS is one of the oldest and largest amateur astronomy societies in the US, and has a long history of conducting the types of activities Dieter Moeller wished to include at The Moeller Observatory. These activities consist of observational astronomy, astrophotography, citizen science, and public outreach. Performing public outreach, one of the primary motivations for Dieter Moeller to build the facility, is something CAS is particularly active in, with CAS now participating in between 60 to 70 outreach events per year around the Cincinnati area.

CAS selects at least one weekend day per month for official members’ nights, as well as conducts other activities, such as data gathering for citizen science and astrophotography when conditions are favorable and the team has capacity to do so.

The best way to experience The Moeller Observatory is through a membership with CAS.
